Honestly, I didn’t know anything about Slovenia before, especially about Maribor. But once I knew my study destination, I did a little research about the lifestyle in the second biggest city in Slovenia, and fortunately, I found really beautiful comments and experiences by other international students. Another thing that interested me, was that they are considered one of the most peaceful countries in the world and also that they have one of the lowest living costs in Europe, compared to the other surrounding countries.
I really wanted to discover more and more things about Slovenia, their traditions, culture, incredible natural parks and basically feel this new adventure in a completely different country. Also, I have never heard before about Academia, my new Business College, but I had the feeling that they are going to be really helpful and kind. They supported me and even helped me find the best transportation options one month before I arrived in the country, as well as, proper student accommodation based on my specific needs.
Since I arrived in Maribor, the international office staff at Academia is always helping me feel integrated into Maribor´s student life, as well as, suggesting activities outside with other Erasmus students. This is my first experience abroad and, in the beginning, I was a little bit scared about the different bureaucratic procedures I had to dealt with, such as obtaining the residence permit, but I have to say that during first weeks here they were always by my side in every single step. Furthermore, they helped me obtain the food student coupons and advice me about the best restaurants in Maribor in which I could get those amazing discounts. They also helped me to join some sports groups, such as the international football team that twice a week organizes football matches in the NK Maribor´s football city center.
Finally, I would like to say that even if I am from the other side of the world, I´ve always felt Maribor is like my second home. I am probably the only Salvadoran citizen studying here in Slovenia and since the first day I came to this country, everybody was really kind to me, helping me improve my learning and social skills.
I will never have enough words to express how grateful I am for being part of this Erasmus + Programme.
